George RR Martin responds to the controversial “Black Wedding”

By now most of the people must’ve at least seen the latest Game of Thrones episode or heard about it from others. The end part of the episode in which Ramsay rapes Sansa while Theon is made to watch it has shocked many viewers and they are protesting against the scene. George RR Martin has been receiving angry emails from fans and he finally spoke about the scene on his blog. This is what he said :

There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one. And for just as long, I have been talking about the butterfly effect. Small changes lead to larger changes lead to huge changes. HBO is more than forty hours into the impossible and demanding task of adapting my lengthy (extremely) and complex (exceedingly) novels, with their layers of plots and subplots, their twists and contradictions and unreliable narrators, viewpoint shifts and ambiguities, and a cast of characters in the hundreds.

There has seldom been any TV series as faithful to its source material, by and large (if you doubt that, talk to the Harry Dresden fans, or readers of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, or the fans of the original WALKING DEAD comic books)… but the longer the show goes on, the bigger the butterflies become. And now we have reached the point where the beat of butterfly wings is stirring up storms, like the one presently engulfing my email.

Prose and television have different strengths, different weaknesses, different requirements.

David and Dan and Bryan and HBO are trying to make the best television series that they can. And over here I am trying to write the best novels that I can.

What is your reaction about the scene? Were you shocked after watching it or were you expecting something like this happening, considering how dangerous the Boltons are?

  1. i was very shocked at the brutal attack on the lovely young girl on her wedding night in fact the character of Bolton is very nasty and unnecessary. It left me thinking about it all and how this is quite shocking. Being not visible it strengthens the scene as our imagination is much more ‘twisted ‘ as the scene portrays, but I suppose that is what was intended?

  2. Hang on… The guy basically spent an entire season torturing Theon in ways that are frankly shocking, is known to hunt down girlfriends and have them torn apart by a pack of dogs, flay the flesh from still living humans, and yet we’re all shocked when he does something that is basically condoned to this day in many highly religious countries (pretty sure I’ve read religious leaders say that a husband pretty much can never be said to have raped his wife… Because she’s his wife and that must somehow mean they can do what they wish). To be honest once they decided to have Sansa marry him on the show this was the LEAST of the possible nasty things he might do to her.

  3. How can anyone be shocked. The bolton’s have a horrible track record!!! Both in the books and in the show! The “red wedding” does that ring a bell!? This story line has put women into an era where women were
Property of their husbands once wed. As much as folks out there now a days dislike that sort of thing it was an actual reality and fact in historical times. Not saying this story is based on historical facts. But in order to wright a grand story some sembalance of fact or true should play a part in it. How else would you captivate your audience!! My thoughts to all of this are just this!! A true fan would understand! A true fan would pay attention to the many interviews out there done with these actors probing them for answers to controversial scarabs. Only to find out that they enjoy acting them out for
Our entertainment together as a team!! I think we should be
Commending them all on there performances!! They have obviously done their job with excellence or
We would not be having this sort of debate! Well done to all involved, keep up the amazing work!! Signed a true GOT/WOIAF fan!!

  4. I didn’t mind. There was much more disturbing scenes, and Black Wedding did not made it in my Top 10. I’m actually surprised everybody was shocked. When (if) will Sansa die, they will probably go and kill Martin …

  5. I was expecting it. Look at what he did to Theon I mean really why was anyone shocked by this? Now don’t twist what I am saying, it is not right but when is anything right In GoT?
